William Van Deusen Powell, "Bill", sailed to his next adventure on October 13th, 2011. Bill was born in Durham, North Carolina on February 27, 1937, to the late Dr. William F. and Alice Van Deusen Powell. Bill was formally educated at North Carolina State University. Bill was an avid reader, runner, and sailor. He began his professional life with the love for the ocean as a member of the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines. Bill owned a successful surveying company in Cocoa Beach, Florida, for over thirty years. Bill leaves behind a long list of loving friends and family. He is survived by five children, Louise Powell Bumgarner, Kevin Powell, Teresa Powell, Michael Powell, and, Richard Powell, and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Mary Alice Powell Adams and Maggie Powell, and brother David Powell. He is predeceased by his brother, Richard Denis Powell. Bill was dearly loved. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Bill's life will be celebrated with close friends and family beginning at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 16th, 2011 at Rusty's Seafood & Oyster Bar, 628 Glen Creek Drive at Port Canaveral, Florida. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
