Frank, 88, passed March 9, 2024 in Melbourne, FL. Born in Watauga County, N.C., to the late William Henry Auton and Gladys Beatrice Auton.
He graduated from Blowing Rock High School in 1956. After High School Frank served in the Army for 4 Years at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon completion of his service, returned home to Boone N.C., met and married Mertis Bentley, and together began their life together. Frank moved to Florida in the mid 1960's with his family.
As owner of Harbor City Signs, in Melbourne Fl., Frank hand lettered most his signs and billboards, including the very distinct Harvey's Groves Billboards seen through Florida.
He enjoyed bird watching, golf, and fishing and was a follower of NASCAR back in the day. Frank also enjoyed painting landscape pictures, using the infamous Bob Ross technics.
He leaves behind his wife, Mertis Bentley Auton, Daughter Connie Auton Ashfield and son in-law Scott Ashfield, Son Robert "Bobby" Auton, grandchildren Stephanie Ashfield Gauzens and son in-law Chris Gauzens, Steven Ashfield and Fiancé Bethany Brusio, Great-Grandson's Jordan and Cody Parsons. Also his sister Evelyn Oleta Nelson of Lenoir, N.C., many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his siblings; six brothers; Ivan, Woodrow Parks, John, Harley, Marvin, Lewis, and R.D. Four sisters, Lois, Virginia Auton, Margaret Bennett, and Margie Wilcox.
Frank was an avid Bird Watcher. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Merritt Island Wildlife Association. Please put in the comments in memory of Frank Auton.
