Wiley Fred Hughes III
Wiley Fred Hughes III, 77, passed away on Monday, May 13th 2024 at his home in Indian Harbour Beach, FL. Fred was born in Danville, VA on March 26, 1947 the oldest child of Wiley Fred Hughes Jr and Evelyn Rowland Hughes. He graduated from George Washington High School and later attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture earning his Bachelors of Architecture. Fred enlisted in the Virginia National Guard in 1968 where he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. He attended the US Army Command and General Staff College in 1977. His final assignment was Commander of 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery, VaARNG. Fred spent 34 years in the Army Reserve where he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In civilian life Fred was known as an accomplished architect with Richmond firm Carneal and Johnston and later as Director of Architecture at Ballou, Justice, Upton Architects. He enjoyed working on many government projects for the State of Virginia, Virginia Tech, The National Archives, as well as numerous county school boards. Fred was an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 829 attending Philmont Scout Ranch where he hiked over 100 miles with the boy scouts. Fred enjoyed spending time working on home projects, riding jet skis, and shooting sports.
In May of 1971, Fred married the love of his life Constance Earle Vail to whom he was married for 48 years. Connie predeceased him April 19, 2019 after a long battle with cancer.
Fred is survived by his sister Anne Hughes Freeze (Tommy) of Danville, VA and two sons Christopher Vail Hughes (Keturah) of Indialantic, FL and Cory Edison Hughes (Gaby) of Waterford, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Katherine, Caroline, Andrew, Allison, Eleanor, and Alice.
