Obituary

Robert H. Varas, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the Palm Bay Hospital surrounded by his family after an extended illness.

Bob was the beloved husband of Johanna S. (Nadolny) Varas. The couple had been married 61 years on April 20 2024. Bob and Johanna made their home in Ogunquit, Maine and Grant, Florida for the past 35 years.

Bob was born in Westerly, Rhode Island and grew up in Bradford, Rhode Island. He was the son of Manuel and Agnes (Silva) Varas. He graduated from Westerly Rhode Island High School in 1958. Bob earned his associate degree in business management at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhil, Massachusetts. He was employed in the textile division of Bradford Dyeing Association in Bradford, Rhode Island until he moved with his wife and children to Kingston, New Hampshire where he was a department manager at Malden Mills, Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Bob was a true outdoorsman. He loved travelling, fishing, vegetable gardening, camping, and cutting enough wood each year to heat the house with a wood stove. He was an extraordinary mathematician, loved geography and could be seen often exploring on his large world globe. He also had a keen interest in archaeology. He loved traveling with his wife Johanna and has driven three times across our country coast to coast including Canada.

With all of Bob's interests, his number one passion was golf. Bob started the sport when he was nineteen and continued golfing twice a week until recently. He has played many courses across the country as well as local courses. If he wasn't playing it, he was watching it on t.v. or talking about it with his friends. He has played many courses across the country and belonged to a league in Sebastian, Florida where he played golf twice a week until recently.

In 1984 Bob and Johanna and children moved to Ogunquit, Maine where they owned and operated a retail gift shop in Perkins Cove called "Coves End." After a few years the gift shop expanded and he and his wife opened a larger retail shop and restaurant business called "Blue Willow" also located in Perkins Cove where their children Rob and Danea and granddaughter Lexus were also part of the family business for 35 years.

They retired from the retail business and moved to Florida to live full time in 2018.

Bob was truly a beautiful quiet soul who touched the lives of anyone who knew him. Today we pause in our grief to be thankful for the special world he shared. He will be missed by so many who loved him.

In addition to his wife, Johanna, he leaves two children, Rob Varas of Grant, Florida and Danea Sevigney of Barefoot Bay, Florida, a granddaughter Lexus Gordon (Ellery) and two great grandchildren, Luca Lane and Quinn David of California. A sister, Elaine Gingerella (Robert), of Pawcatuck, Connecticut. He is predeceased by a brother Jim Varas of Pawcatuck, several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

A mass was help for Bob at St. Lukes Catholic Church in Barefoot Bay, Florida with a Celebration of Life following on May 4, 2024.

A donation may be made in Bob's memory to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.
