Melbourne, FL Richard A. Slater, age 74, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on November 30 after a long battle of illnesses.

Mr. Slater our family hero is survived by his wife, Judith Slater, five children with spouses: Chris & Sheri Slater, Tony & Renee Slater, Melanie & Jason Jordan, Wendy & Joseph Hale, John & Misty Ellis. His brother Roger Slater and sister Alice Slater. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was born on April 29th 1943, the son of Harry Slater and Ethel Doyle Slater in Sharon Springs, NY, and grew up in Cobleskill, NY and lived in various parts of the United States.

Richard's passion was always to serve his country and communities. He became a veteran of the Vietnam War with various medals such as National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ service, Vietnam Service Medal w/1*, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, Good Conduct Medal w/2*, Merit Unit Citation, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/p&f, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

After leaving the military Richard's bravery and commitment to keeping our communities safe moved to the civil service sector as a police officer, K9 trainer, EMT and rescue squads, medical transport, volunteer firefighter and private security officer. Richard's police career started in Cobleskill, NY, Topsail Beach NC, Surf City, NC, and Holly Ridge, NC. His security detail included various companies from UNCW Wilmington, NC and Walt Disney World, FL before he retired.

Richard will be laid to rest at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims Fl. A private ceremony will be held in the month of January, 2018. In lieu of flowers at Richard's request donations can be made to the wounded warrior project at www.support.woundedwarriorproject.org
