IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard "Dick"
Bedard
February 2, 1934 – December 6, 2024
Richard "Dick" Bedard, age 90, died December 6, 2024 at Melbourne, FL.
Born February 2, 1934 to Lauretta (Jensen) and Wilfred Bedard, in Toledo, Ohio. He spent his childhood years in The Old West End attending Rosary Cathedral School and Central Catholic High School. It was there he met his loving wife of 69 years, Althea Langenderfer. Married in 1955, they settled in The Old West End and raised five children. During the 1960's, Dick was the head coach for the Rosary Cathedral 5th and 6th grade boys' basketball team. He was always proud of their winning record, finishing first or second in the CYO League every year. In addition, he was the head football coach for the school in that period. Dick and Althea were instrumental in organizing the Booster Club at Rosary Cathedral.
In 1974, Dick and Althea purchased the "Longhorn Saloon" on Philips Ave. in Toledo, Ohio where they worked side-by-side for twenty-four years. Famous for Friday Night Fish Fry and St. Patrick's Day celebrations when the name was temporarily changed to "O'Bedard's" Longhorn Saloon. He often said that was a great time in his life, having wonderful customers and making great friends. Many customers may remember him famously saying -- "And, we thank you."
Credited with saving the lives of two drowning victims and two hunters in quicksand, Dick was nominated to receive the Fireman's Award for Heroism, which he declined, saying he was not a "Hero."
Dick and Althea traveled in their motorhomes extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Retiring in Florida finding residence in Cape Coral, Winter Haven and Sebastian.
He loved listening to music, dancing and a Five O'clock cocktail poolside. Yeah, Baby!
He is survived by his devoted wife, Althea; children Richard (Kathryn) Bedard, Bob (Debbie) Bedard, Sherry (Joe) Poirier, Tim (Pam) Bedard and Denis (Tricia) Bedard, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass is scheduled on Thursday, June 12th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral Catholic church, 2535 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, OH 43610. A reception will be held afterward at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Richard Bedard 2/2/1934 to Vitas Hospice Health Care (321) 751-6671.
