Obituary

Raymond E. Stern, 85, passed away on Tuesday, April, 4, 2017.

He was born to the late Erhard and Johanna Stern on July 2, 1931, in Bronx, New York. He graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, New York in 1949. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA in 1953.

Ray married Helma Schroder in 1955. They lived in Clifton, New Jersey where he worked for Becton Dickinson as a new products engineer. Later they moved to Long Island where he worked as an engineer for Grumman, working primarily in their aerospace division.

In 1973 they moved to Melbourne, FL where they owned and operated Keels and Wheels Service Company. The business handled boat sales and service, including engine and trailer sales and repair.

A lifelong boater, Ray was active as a member of the Banana River Power Squadron, serving many roles including Commander in 1989. After retiring he and Helma spent time exploring the Florida waterways with their own boat, taking many trips with the Day Away Travel Club.

In addition to traveling Ray took an interest in woodworking and spent hours in his shop making many special projects.

Ray is survived by his wife Helma, son Eric and daughter-in-law Sara (Thomas) Stern of Santa Rosa Valley, CA and daughter Kaaren and son-in-law Kerry Johnson of DeLand, FL. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Jessica, Juliana, James and Joshua Stern and Carolyn and Katie Johnson.
