Raymond Dwyer's Obituary
Raymond J. (Ray) Dwyer passed away peacefully on September 11, 2015.
Born January 1, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Thomas and Olga Dwyer.
He graduated from Calumet High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was called up in 1943.
After training in Miami Beach and Orangeburg, SC, he received his wings at Shaw AFB, Sumpter, SC in 1944. He flew C-47's and C-46's with the 9th Air Force in support of Patton's army through the end of WWII. After the war he attended DePaul University, College of Law graduating in 1949. After law school he joined the FBI where, on assignment to the New Jersey office he met Mary Virginia (Jinny) Curtin whom he would marry on September 11, 1954 in Miami.
In 1952, he moved to Florida, first Orlando, then joining the Dade County solicitor's office in 1954. He went into private practice in 1958 and spent 38 years as a civil trial attorney. He earned a reputation as a fierce courtroom opponent specializing in defending catastrophic injury and medical malpractice cases.
In the 1960's and 70's he tried some of the most significant civil cases of the day, some of which lead to landmark legal rulings that are still the controlling case law. In 1996 he retired as the senior partner of Cary, Dwyer, Cole, Eckhart and Mason, PA., after successfully defending one last medical malpractice case as co-counsel with his son, Scott Raymond.
Ray was predeceased by Jinny, his loving wife of 44 years, who passed in 1998.
Surviving are his three children, Deborah Lee, Scott Raymond, Karen Virginia and daughter in law, Lissete; five grandsons, Raymond Jeffrey, Christopher Scott, Scott Raymond, Jr., Anthony Gioviani, and Roman William; five granddaughters, Lucile Ray, Antoinette Virginia, Jenevieve Rachael, Prisila Leilani and Krista Virginia; one great-grandchild, Alora Ray and his friend and companion of the last 15 years, Joanne Popper.
Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was loved and will be missed by many.
A celebration of his life and a military service is being planned for the beginning of 2016.
