Mary Ellen (Mangan) Rohr, 91 of Melbourne, FL died Tuesday, August 25, 2020 with her family by her side.
She was born to the late Thomas and Ruby Mangan on Dec. 18 th 1929 in Pacific, Missouri. She was the oldest of 7 children. Mary graduated from Pacific High School in 1947. She then moved to the city of St. Louis, gaining a job as a switchboard operator. With her new wages, she began to send money home to help feed her brothers and sisters when her family had fallen on hard times. While in St. Louis, Mary met a handsome, young Air Force "Fly Boy" named Leroy C. Rohr, which would become the beginning of a lifelong love affair. Cute story here, when Leroy and Mary began seeing one another, she wasn't quite ready to go off the market yet and wanted to keep her options open, so she continued dating around. She finally decided to be exclusive with Leroy, at a very inopportune time—right as she was to meet another man for a date. Lee showed up unannounced in an effort to woo Mary away. It worked, and they hid behind a large Church sign and waited for the other man to disappear. Not long after this, Mary and Leroy decided to elope and hopped on a train to Gulf Springs, Mississippi where they married on July 3 rd 1950. They would go on to travel the United States and world as a military family, having 4 children in 4 different states. After the Air Force, her husband took a job at NASA, so in 1968, Mary and family relocated to Melbourne, Florida to start a new life. Lee ended up passing in 1980. Mary never remarried.
After the death of her husband Lee, Mary went back to school at Brevard Community College. While there, she received a degree in Fashion Merchandising—as she had always been a fashionista making her own clothes and keepsakes. She also became a Licensed Practical Nurse "LPN", and looked adorable in her Nurses' hat. Another interesting fact is at one time she owned 10 horses! At one time! People knew of her kind and open heart, and they just gravitated to her and gave her horses. Her father was also a Horse trader, so I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! J
She spent a lot of time travelling back and forth to her home town of St. Louis where her sister Cathy had bought a farm. They would have a blast every summer canning food, making jelly, and just enjoying life.
Mary was an active member of Ascension Catholic Church: in the Choir, Funeral Choir, and the order of the Franciscans.
Mary is survived by her children Pamela Rohr of West Melbourne; Patricia and (Timothy) Bass of Cocoa; Lawrence and (Elisa) Rohr of Debary; and her late son Steven Rohr of St. Louis, MO. She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren Matthew; Cory; Allyssa; Clayton; Ryan; Rebecca; Rachel; Caleb; Joshua and two great grandchildren Jack and Liam.
