Obituary

Linda Chase Phillips of West Melbourne passed away on March 10, 2022 while holding her daughter's hand at the William Child's Hospice House. Linda was born on August 21, 1941 in the Bronx, NY and grew up in Miami, FL primarily with her father, Arnold Salmi.

Linda enjoyed the multicultural atmosphere of Miami.  She attended a vocational technical high school and studied advertising and display art.  A chance conversation in a neighborhood store led to a job with Tel-Car Corp in Miami, one of the first companies providing beeper and mobile radio service, including an air-to-ground channel for small private planes, where she held a 2 nd class radio license.  There she met her first husband, Bob Chase, through her coworker, who was also her future mother-in-law.  She and Bob had two children, Edward and Kristine.  After leaving Tel-Car, Linda worked a few part time jobs before retiring.

Linda and her second husband, George Phillips, moved to Gainesville in 1983.  She had the opportunity to take continuing education art classes there, which gave her great enjoyment.  Linda was a talented artist who painted beautiful watercolors and created clay sculptures that she displayed in art shows.  In her retirement years, she had an art studio where she spent many joyful days.

It was in Gainesville where Linda met the love of her life, Andy.  They spent 10 years together traveling and living together.  A few years after Andy passed, Linda moved to Brevard county to be close to her daughter, Kris and grandson Vincent.  The three of them were very fortunate to spend the last eight years of Linda's life living together.  Watching her grandson grow up before her eyes was the biggest joy of her life.  She was so proud of him as all of her friends knew.  She was a loving and supportive grandmother and was very much appreciated.

Linda was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, which she first joined in 1973 in Miami.  The church was a huge part of her life.  At the Miami UU, she volunteered as a youth art instructor.  After moving to Gainesville, she joined the UU there and volunteered as a yoga instructor, a small group facilitator and a youth art instructor.  Her final UU family in Melbourne was an opportunity for her to serve as a board member and a heart circle facilitator.  She was very important to her friends as they were to her as well.  Most of her close, long time friendships were formed at the UU Churches she attended.

Linda loved to read and was so knowledgeable.  She loved watching Jeopardy every night and answered so many questions correctly.  Even though she wasn't able to attend college and become an architect like she wanted to, her intelligence and intuition was appreciated by all who knew her.

You always knew where you stood with Linda as she was quick to give you her opinion and offer you her advice.  She was loved and appreciated by her family and friends and was fortunate to have a close relationship with her son and daughter.  Her frequent phone conversations with her son and daughter-in-law gave her great joy.  The bond she had with her daughter was a special mother-daughter friendship filled with much love.  She will be missed so much.

Linda is survived by her son and his wife, Edward and Mary Chase of Alton, IL, her daughter, Kristine Stone of West Melbourne, FL, three grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 2pm on April 16, 2022 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brevard, 2185 Meadowlane Avenue, West Melbourne.
