Obituary

Judith Alison Stevens passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4th with her son Kenneth by her side.

Judy was born to the late Margaret and Kenneth Dow on May 21st, 1934, in Portland, Maine. She graduated from Portland High School in 1952. Shortly thereafter she enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean war, was trained to be a Radioman like her father and was stationed in San Deigo, CA. She often mused about the other women Radiomen flirting over the radio with the sailors on the ships at sea. At the end of her four years of service, she met her first husband, Dean Steinmetz, who was also in the US Navy and was married in Portland, Maine. Dean was transferred to Anacortes, WA where she gave birth to her two sons, Kenneth, and two years later, Mark. In 1961 Dean was transferred to the US Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT. They remained in New England to raise their two sons who both graduated from Stonington High School in Connecticut. There, she started her career in the restaurant field working her way up as Hostess, Waitress, Bartender, Manager, and eventually to owning her own restaurant with two of her close friends called “The Rainbow’s End” in Westerly, RI. After she and Dean divorced, she remarried Everett Stevens of Waterford, CT. Shortly after, Everett and Judy moved to Florida and bought a house in Palm Bay on Bradway St. They also purchased an RV and began their sojourn to visit virtually every national park in America. Later, Judy took a part-time job as a cashier in the cafeteria of the local High School in Palm Bay as their travels subsided. She was an active member of the “Melbourne Belles” Chapter of the Red Hats Society for many, many years. She and Everett remained together until his passing in 2016.

Judith is survived by her two sons, Kenneth Steinmetz of San Francisco, CA, Mark Steinmetz of Stonington CT, and three grandchildren Max, Zackary, and Nika.

At her request, no service will be held. Her remains will be laid to rest with her family of origin in Maine.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in her name to the charity of their choice.
