Obituary

John L. Hemel 87, of Melbourne, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022 with his family by his side. He was born to the late John and Ida Hemel on January 6, 1935 in New Orleans, LA. He married his childhood sweetheart, Geraldine Serio on July 16, 1955 and moved to Melbourne, FL in 1959. John loved his career as the Sr. Motion Picture Film Editor for Technicolor Graphic Services at Kennedy Space Center until he retired in 2001.
John joined the Knights of Columbus at Father Gabriel Council in Melbourne in 1968. He loved the Knights and what they stood for and was elected State Deputy in 1998. He was one of the charter members of Ascension Catholic Church and was an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist, lector and sang in the Resurrection choir. His faith and his family were the most important to him. He also enjoyed singing and drawing.

John was predeceased by his daughters, Cynthia Aucoin and Mary Stephens. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, his children, Susan Cervola of West Melbourne, Deborah (Jay) Wisdom of Palm Bay and John (Angela) Hemel Jr. of West Melbourne.  He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Friday, July 22 from 6-8pm at Ascension Catholic Church, with the praying of the Rosary at 7:30 pm. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, July 23 at 11:00 AM at Ascension Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made out to William Childs Hospice House, 381 Medplex Parkway, Palm Bay, FL 32907.
