John Guinn, 88, died peacefully September 18, 2012, at Vitas Hospice, Merritt Island. He was born July 20, 1924, in Los Angeles and raised from infancy in South Pasadena, the youngest child of Howard and Delta Guinn and last surviving grandchild of James Miller Guinn, a Civil War veteran, noted historian, one of the founders of the Southern California Historical Society and Superintendent of the Los Angeles School District.
John attended schools locally and graduated in 1948 from the University of Southern California with a BS in accounting. He started his career as a Bank Examiner with FDIC, and then was associated with several S&L's in the Los Angeles area as treasurer or vice president. He moved to Boca Raton in 1989 after retiring from Gibraltar S&L, then to Indian Harbour Beach in June 2007.
He participated actively in the communities where he lived. He served in all offices of the Lions Clubs of Altadena, CA, and Boca Raton, including a number of terms as president, was president of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of the Altadena American Legion, and served for many years as secretary of the 8th Air Force Historical Society, FL Chapter.
A veteran of WWII with the 8th Air Force, he flew combat missions over Germany as a B-1 7 radio operator/gunner. With his move to Indian Harbour Beach he became a faithful member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. At his baptism he became a child ofGod; now he is safely home in his Savior's hands.
Remembering him with much love are his wife, Dorothy of IHB, daughters Debra (Larry) Biggerstaff of Long Beach, CA, and Pamela (Dennis) Murray of Rapid City, SD, son W. Randel of Anaheim, CA, adopted son Jeffrey (Susan) of Eagle River, AK, and stepson Gregory Solt of Monrovia, CA; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by son Scott, sister Dorothy Fan, and brother James.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 29, at 2:00 PM, in the historic chapel at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 50 W. Strawbridge, Melbourne, FL 32901, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Private burial will be at a later date in the Guinn family plot in Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles.
Anyone planning to donate in his memory is asked to consider Holy Trinity or Vitas Hospice, 4450 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., Suite 250, Melbourne, FL 32934.
