IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John "Johnny"
Fields
September 24, 1953 – March 10, 2024
John "Johnny" "Coach" Fields of Grant, Florida at the age of 70, went to heaven on March 10, 2024.
He was born in Danville, Virginia to Emmett Edgar and Nena Anne Yeaman Fields on September 24, 1953. He graduated from Virginia State with a Bachelors in Physical Education. He immediately got a job coaching and teaching at Kenston Forest School, in Blackstone, Virginia. After two years he decided to follow his dream of living in Florida. Coach Fields taught at St. Mary's Catholic School in Rockledge, Florida. While there he made many lifelong friends - and three "little" brothers – Drew Johnson, Leo Misch, and Kenny Sebree. During this time period, he coached at Rockledge High School and around this time, another passion was born. He became a scuba instructor and taught at several different dive shops and private lessons. He then took a job overseas on Acension Island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean for two years as the "Recreation Director." Returning to Rockledge, he taught, coached, and was the strength and conditioning coach for Brevard Community College. This is where he met the love of his life, Jeanie Blawn. In 1987 he was the Physical Education Teacher at Sherwood Elementary School and married Jeanie. When they built their dream house in Grant, they had no idea what an amazing community they had moved into. This was his "Mayberry". After 23 years at Sherwood he retired. He missed teaching, and became a substitute teacher at Sunrise Elementary School where Jeanie taught.
Johnny and Jeanie lead an adventurous life and did everything together. They taught scuba diving, had a boat charter business, got their captain's licenses, rode motorcycles, were volunteer firefighters, had integral roles at The Grant Seafood Festival (which raises money for scholarships), bought a house in Roatan Honduras, and enjoyed the island life. However, his biggest accomplishment and joy was his son, Tommy; he was the light of his life and best buddy.
Everyone that knew him, knew that he always had a story. His most favorite was when he wrestled a bear - twice. Johnny was loved by so many, and you always knew where you stood. He was most often seen in shorts and no shoes. He was laid back and made people laugh at some of his "off" ideas - using a Duke's mayonnaise jar as his urn, (He's going to be disappointed). John "Johnny" "Coach" Fields will be fondly remembered and missed by his many friends, family, and Atlas (truly "a man's best friend"). A celebration of his amazing life will be April 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Grant Seafood Festival grounds 4580 1st Street Grant, Florida 32949.
Johnny spent his life dedicated to kids being a lifelong teacher and coach. Therefore, if you're interested, he asked in lieu of flowers he would like you to consider donating to St Jude or the V Foundation in his name. Thank you all so much for being a part of his authentic and wonderful life.
