Obituary

John ("Jack") Conrad Barthelmy, age 90, a resident of Melbourne, FL, died on September 5, 2022, suddenly at home. He was born June 3, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois to Bernice and George Barthelmy, but was raised by loving father Ernest Del Ponte after the untimely death of his father George when John was only 2. John had an older brother Jim, with whom he was close and a sister, Renee.

John completed his studies at York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1950. During his time there, he held the position of Senior Class President and excelled as a multi-sport athlete, earning numerous letters and honors in basketball, golf, and football. As the captain of the varsity basketball team, known as the Dukes, he showcased his leadership skills. Additionally, John served as the editor of Y's Tales and was a proud member of the National Honor Society. His outstanding achievements in athletics, academics, and social activities earned him a well deserved four-year scholarship to Lake Forest College.

John received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Lake Forest College in 1954 and also completed additional graduate work at Western Michigan University. During his time at Lake Forrest, John was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and President of the Interfraternity Council. His love of sports continued as he played college basketball. He was also a member of the Homecoming Committee, the Economics Club, and the Madrigal Singers.

Shortly before turning 24, John joined the United States Naval Reserve. After training, he received the call to serve on active duty aboard the USS General William Mitchell T-AP-114, where he was a Petty Officer 3rd class. Interestingly, John's brother was also a naval reservist. John dedicated six years of his life to serving in the military.

John's love for singing and acting started during his time at York High School, where he discovered the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. He further pursued his passion at Lake Forest College, where he actively took part in the men's chorus and showcased his talent as a soloist in various variety shows. Following his college years, John joined forces with three others to create the quartet, the Music Makers. He generously shared his talents with the Navy Chorus Great Lakes. Throughout his life, John cherished his passion for singing and performing thanks to his rich baritone voice. His exceptional vocal abilities often led to requests for him to perform on special occasions.

John was married on August 8, 1960, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Maryquin Conway. They shared 33 years of marriage, during which they did not have any children, but cherished their many canine companions. Following Maryquin's sudden death, John found solace in the company of his friend Helena Kolp, with whom he engaged in activities like golfing, traveling, and simply enjoying life. After Helena's untimely passing, John formed a close bond with Mary Jane Winn and her family.

John lived most of his adult life in Florida, working as a marketing executive. Notably, he worked for Belden Wire and General Electric and successfully managed nationwide advertising campaigns for both television and print media. His exceptional professional achievements were recognized through multiple awards.

As an avid sports fan, John continued to pursue his love of athletics and was a scout for the National Scouting Report, helping student-athletes fulfill their dreams of playing in college. He passionately cheered for the Chicago Bears and all the teams he followed. John was also a lifelong golf enthusiast, enjoyed playing and loved the game so much that he retired to a condo on the links so he could pursue his passion every day.

John is survived by his dear sister-in-law Marlene Barthelmy and niece and nephew Laura Henderson and Jason Barthelmy, of Toronto, Canada, and nieces Tina AhChing, Tracy Flanagan, and Terri Flynn, of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, (Maryquin Barthelmy), his brother (Jim Barthelmy), and his sister (Renee Bartys).

His kindness, humor, and joyful spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Keep John in your thoughts with a round of golf, a secret toast, and a smile.
