IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jennifer Karen
Cook
October 21, 1978 – April 1, 2023
With heavy hearts, the family and friends of Jennifer Karen Cook announce her sudden and unexpected passing on April 1, 2023 at her home in Melbourne, Florida.
Born in Atlanta, GA, October 21, 1978 to Brad and Karen Hartley of Villa Rica, GA. Jennifer was the oldest of three siblings. She attended Blackstock Montessori School, Carrollton Jr. High, and Carrollton High School in Georgia, graduating in 1996 with honors. Completing an undergraduate degree in psychology at Emory University in 2000, she then received a master's degree in education from West Virginia University, where she later pursued her doctorate (ABD). Jennifer met her husband Travis in August of 2007 during a football game at WVU. They married in July, 2012.
Jennifer always gave 100% to anything she was doing. She loved her cats, Disney (mainly the classics), reading, and gaming. Jennifer held a fourth-degree black belt in Choi Kwang Do and taught high school math for eight years. While between careers, she drove a truck and worked in the service industry. Anyone who spent any time with Jennifer knew of her intelligence and her love for books. She used to go to a used bookstore close to home every few weeks to trade the books she'd just finished for new ones. Sci-fi. Cozy fantasy. LitRPG, and many other genres piqued her interest. Jennifer read and reviewed hundreds of titles a year, which led to a new career in the publishing industry. She had achieved her dream job—being paid to read—and began writing a book of her own, which will be published posthumously.
No matter what, Jennifer always stuck by her friends. Protective. Faithful. Kind. Steadfast. She gave respect when and where it was given, and she practiced what she preached. She made a difference. Her generosity reached more lives than she may have realized, since she gave to charities like the National Battered Women's Fund and a local homeless outreach. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to these or to your local women's shelter.
Jennifer is survived by her loving husband Travis, her parents, Brad and Karen Hartley, brothers Michael of Charlotte, NC and Brian of Atlanta, GA, in addition to nephews Jack, Sam, Beau, Wells, and Ford. As per her request, Jennifer's remains will be cremated. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
