HAROLD CHARLES FISCHER, age 91, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012, in Melbourne, FL. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 13, 1920 to the late Catharine Elsbett and Charles Fred Fischer. Harold grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in 1938. While in high school, he was mentored by the late, great, Bob Shepherd (Voice of the NY Yankees). Harold prided himself on his own deep, resonating voice, which he used whenever he got the opportunity to speak. He was born too late for vaudeville, but he would have been a natural - he never met a corny joke he didn't deliver.
Harold joined the Army Air Corps and flew in a B24 as a 2nd engineer, rear gunner during World War Il. Following the war, he met and married Dora Beitia Fischer from Boise, Idaho. He brought her back to NY where they settled in Seaford, NY. Harold worked as a salesman in New York City for the Schlitz Beer Company for 17 years. Following his years as a salesman, he worked in the employ of NY State Senator Roy Goodman and in the late 1980s Harold and Dora returned to Boise, Idaho to enjoy retirement. In August 1998, Dora passed away and in June, 2001 their only son, Robert, also passed away in Idaho.
Two years later, Harold came to Melbourne, FL to visit a former Seaford neighbor and friend, Ronnie Murray. An old friendship was renewed and a new union made when Harold and Ronnie Murray married November 9, 2002 at Ascension Church. Together they enjoyed cruises, family gatherings and going to Church tunctions.Harold is survived by his loving wife, Veronica (Ronnie) Murray Fischer, her children, John Murray, Lolly Westmoreland, Maureen Fulford and Ronnie Ahern, their spouses, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His half-brother, Charles "Buddy" O'Connor still resides in NJ, nephew Charlie O'Connor of Merritt Island, niece Judy (John) Lynett also of Florida, nephew Gary (Eleanor) Gutheil of North Carolina and niece Lynne Schimmel of Ocala, FL. Harold also leaves his beloved nephew John (Penny) Gratton from Boise, ID. Harold was predeceased by his brother Fr. Stanley Fischer and his half-sister, Dorothy Gutheil and nephews Gary Gratton and Joseph Gratton, both of Boise, ID. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1PM on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Ascension Church in Melbourne, FL.
