Glen Edward Smith, 90, of West Melbourne, FL, passed on to his Lord's care surrounded by friends and family at his home on Thursday, June 25, 2015. He was born June 3, 1925 in Huntington, IN, to Arthur C. and Bessie M. Smith. After High School graduation he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as navigator from 1943 until 1946. He later continued to serve our country, becoming active in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1954, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1973. Shortly after graduating from Indiana University in 1949 he married the love of his life, Shirley, from Stuttgart AR, daughter of Mable A and Kenneth Gilbert. The happy couple moved to Miami, FL in 1950, which they called home for 52 years. After graduating from University of Miami Law School he joined the law firm of Morehead, Forrest, Gotthardt & Orr where he clerked while a student. In 1955, he became trust officer at Miami Beach First National Bank until 1964 when he joined the Trust Department of the First National Bank of Miami as Vice-President. In 1973, Glen became the head of the probate department of Blackwell, Walker, Gray, Powers Flick & Hoehl law firm. In 1981 he joined Goodwin, Ryskamp Welcher & Carrier until 1983 when he set up his private practice. He retired in 2002, when he and Shirley moved to West Melbourne.
He lived his strong Christian faith daily and was active in church and served as a Deacon at Galloway Orthodox Presbyterian Church and was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian in Miami and Covenant Presbyterian Church in Palm Bay. In the community, he served as past Presidents of the Greater Miami Estate Planning Council, the Army & Navy Club of Coral Gables, The Kiwanis Club of Miami, as past Dean of Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity Alumni, and as past Commander of the Miami Beach Chapter of Military Order of World Wars. He also served on the Board of Directors of Westminster Christian School and was past President of Westminster Chiefs.
He is predeceased by his brothers Earl and Harry, his sister Pauline (Polly) and his soul mate and beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley.
He is survived by his children, Glen Jr (Shan), Kent and Sue Ann, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, the most recent being Glen Edward Smith, IV. Glen was a kind and generous man and praised God every day for the blessings in his life. His warm smile brightened any room and his positive attitude enriched all those who knew him. His love and devotion to his family and friends was boundless. He will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 2:00 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 720 Emerson Drive NE, Palm Bay, FL 32907.
