Obituary

With hearts full of gratitude for a life well-lived, we honor the beautiful legacy of Gail Dittbrenner. A woman of incredible warmth, wisdom, and joy, Gail filled the world with love, laughter, and knowledge. She embraced every moment with curiosity and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched.

Gail was the only child born to Jack and Cleta Griswold in Sherman, TX. Her life was enriched through the love and companionship she shared in marriage. She was first married to Richard Thornton, with whom she built a family and created treasured memories. She later married Roland Nelson, with whom she shared new adventures and experiences. In her later years, she found companionship and connection with John Dittbrenner, who was by her side as she continued to embrace life's joys.

A dedicated exceptional student educator for over 40 years, Gail shaped countless lives through her unwavering commitment to learning and education. Outside the classroom, she found joy in gourmet cooking, butterflies, gardening, and fishing alongside her dear friend, Charlie. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore the world, with cruising being one of her favorite pastimes.

Gail's faith was a guiding light in her life. As an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Merritt Island, she sang in the Chancel Choir, served as a liturgist, and participated wholeheartedly in the Women of Faith Bible Study. Her voice, service, and devotion enriched her community and those around her.

She is survived by her loving children, William (Mary) Thornton, Alan (Lee) Thornton, Sharon Thornton; her adored grandchildren, Kyle Thornton, Kris Sanches, Bryce Thornton, Dani Knipstein, Alyssa Thornton, Nichalous Thornton, and Savanna Thornton; and six cherished great-grandchildren.

Gail's warmth, intelligence, and unwavering love for life touched everyone she met. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church (65 Needle Blvd, Merritt Island, FL 32953) on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
