Eugene Adair Howell went home to the Lord on November 19, 2014, due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He passed away at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida, with his wife, Gretta, at his side. He was 76. Gene was born on November 23, 1937, in Clinton, South Carolina, to Thomas and Elizabeth (Adair) Howell. He graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served twenty years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Ordnance Corps and was stationed in the U.S., Germany, and Vietnam. After retirement from the Army, he worked as a program director for Textron and Northrop Grumman. In his private life, he was a leader for Boy Scouts of America, mentoring his grandson, Remington, from Cub Scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was an avid football fan, weekend golfer, oil painter, and member of the Bonsai Society of Brevard, for which he served several years as secretary. Gene's first commitment was always to his family, and like the Army, he took care of his own. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gretta L. (Shockley) Howell; daughter and son-in-law, Gena and Kevin Middleton, and their sons, Cale, Jake, and Vlad; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Bruce Wilson; son and daughter-in-law, Gary (Eugene) and Jennifer Howell, and their son, Remington. A visitation will take place on November 25th from 1 to 2 p.m. at Davis Seawinds Funeral Home in Eau Gallie, Florida. A funeral service will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., officiated by Reverend Blaine Johnson. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
