Melbourne
Eugene C. Di Cerbo, 97, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, May 22, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. The youngest son of Italian immigrants, Gene was born and raised in South Philadelphia. He attended Southern High School and was a proud graduate of Villanova University 35. He went on to enjoy a long and successful career as the Chief US Probation Officer for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He was President of the PA Association on Probation, Parole and Corrections, and served on the advisory council of the PA Governor's Justice Commission. Other honors include the Police Chiefs Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania Award of Merit and the Quarter Sessions Court of Philadelphia County Certificate of Merit.
Although he retired in 1974, Gene was an avid participant in government affairs and at the age of 95 years old, authored a book, For A Better America: Observations, Insights and a Plan for Action by a 95 Year Old American. He was the founder of the Suntree Men's Tennis Association at the Suntree Country Club and in 1994 an annual award in his honor was established by the league.
He loved tennis, was a passionate Philadelphia sports fan, played Bridge and exercised regularly at the YMCA. For years he and his wife Doris, volunteered for the Daily Bread and were long-time, active parishioners at Ascension Catholic Church. Most of all he will be remembered as "God's personal laughter lieutenant" always finding a way to make everyone who crossed his path laugh.
He is survived by sons, Daniel (wife, Conny), Stephen (partner, Betsy Howard), Robert; twin daughters, Gina Rolkowski (husband, Frank) and Stephanie Baffone (husband, Vinny); Five grandchildren, Jessica Di Cerbo, Danielle Damault, Christina Di Cerbo, Juila Di Cerbo and Cecilia Burnet and two great-grandchildren, Jermey and Jacob Irving.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Doris (nee Dennison), and brothers Ralph and Vito.
Family will greet friends from 10 AM to 11:30 AM on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30AM.
