Edwyna Swinson "Miss Eddie" Whitacre, 89, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2012 in Melbourne, Florida at Atlantic Shores Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Tampa, Florida on June 27, 1922 and graduated from Hillsborough High School in Tampa. She is survived by her sons William L. Whitacre (wife Gay) and W. Scott Whitacre (wife Jill), grandchildren Matthew Whitacre, Jennifer Whitacre Pettyjohn, Lindsey and Wesley Whitacre, and great grandchildren Peyton and Parker Pettyjohn, as well as her sister Carol Bogardus and niece Ann Abercrombie of Jacksonville, and other cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her husband of more than fifty years, Bradford H. Whitacre, and her beloved brother Ronald Swinson, both decorated WWII combat pilots, predeceased her. Mrs. Whitacre moved to Brevard County in 1952 when her husband graduated from the University of Florida and he began teaching at Melbourne High School. After raising her two sons she worked for many years at Eau Gallie Florist. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, reading and spending time with her friends and family. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday January 14th at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1591 Highland Avenue in Melbourne, where she was a long time member.
