IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris Soares
Brown
December 15, 1929 – June 29, 2021
Doris Mae Soares Brown, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on June 29, 2021 at age 91. Born on December 15, 1929 to Frank Soares and Emily Ignacio, she was raised in Hawaii along with her two brothers, Theodore (Ted) and Richard. Doris was a Pearl Harbor survivor and recalled being in church when the raid occurred. Her love for Hawaii was captivated in her passion for hula dancing and Don Ho music.
Her marriage to a young airman in the United States Air Force brought her to the mainland in 1960. By 1967, the Brown family, including their four young children, relocated to Patrick Air Force Base, Florida where they became members of Ascension Catholic Parish. As a devout Catholic, Doris' dedication to Ascension community was evidenced by her election as the 1970 Woman of the Year for the women's guild. With over 35 years volunteer work, she served in many different capacities; including preparing the weekly church linens, counting the weekly offerings, sewing crafts for the annual bizarre, and serving at the school lunch counter. Her volunteer work extended into the local community through her visitation to home bound and nursing homes, as well as ushering for the Maxwell King Center events.
Doris enjoyed bowling, bingo, and crocheting, but above anything else, she enjoyed time spent with family. Most of her children's friends considered her a motherly figure. Her sacrifice and abounding devotion for her children and grandchildren can be summed up in these words by Jeffrey R. Holland:
"No love in mortality comes closer to approximating the pure love of Jesus Christ than the selfless love a devoted mother has for her child."
Doris is survived by two sons, Dewey and Dennis, a daughter, Shirley (Brown) Bonifacio, and five grandchildren. She is preceded in death by another son, Clifford.
