Obituary

Christine Wood Bell was born Oct. 19, 1928, in the small coastal community of Eau Gallie, Florida, and died peacefully on Dec. 26, 2024, in the same general area, which is today an historic neighborhood of Melbourne.

Her parents were Leila Pierce Wood and Edgar Lee Wood, and her siblings included two sisters, Evone and Kay, and three brothers, John B., Ed and Frank.

Christine attended Eau Gallie School for 12 years, where she was a star athlete and played several sports. After school, she worked in several venues, including the popular Oleanders Hotel during its heyday. (The Squid Lips Restaurant now operates at that location.)

Christine knew the ancestors of many first families of Eau Gallie, a live-oak dotted enclave along the Indian River on Florida's East Coast, and she later told fascinating stories of growing up there. She was a natural storyteller and a living history book.

It was in Eau Gallie that Christine met the man who would become her husband, Vance Bell, when he returned from his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II Not long after meeting, the two married.

The only time she left Eau Gallie was to move to Tallahassee so that Vance could attend Florida State University. The school had operated as the Florida State College for Women until it became FSU in order to admit returning WWII vets.

Somewhat ironically at that point, the student body ratio was about 50 women to each man, but Christine was not one of those coeds! Instead, she was a wife and mother caring for a home, a husband and two young children, Vance Wayne and Brenda Joan Bell, enabling Vance to get his education.

Christine's college degree would come next. Once Vance graduated, the young couple returned to Eau Gallie, and Christine went to work for RCA near Patrick Air Force Base. While working, she also studied at home and earned her degree in mathematics, which got her the career advancement she wanted as a mathematician within the RCA/GE complex. It was work she did until her retirement at age 60.

It was also during her time with the RCA group that she met and made her lifelong friend, Mae Piszczek. It was a friendship she cherished.

Christine also cherished reading, and she passed that gift along to her children. You could say, she both regaled them with the good stories she told and encouraged them to read the good stories told by others.

Christine may have only lived in two places on the map, but don't think of her as a small-town woman limited by geography. Her world was vast. In fact, Vance's career with a Pan AM Airlines subsidiary opened the world to them. With him, Christine ultimately traveled to 64 countries and to every state in the union – and she loved it! Fortunately, she kept wonderful diaries of their travels, and those accounts are treasured by her family.

Christine is much loved and missed by her surviving child, Brenda; her surviving brother, Ed; her daughter in law Suzie (wife of Wayne, who died in 2022); her friend of many years, Maria Gonzalez; and her caring neighbor, Sue Carden.

Christine was the oldest member of Eau Gallie First Baptist, and once she was physically unable to attend the services and activities there, she much appreciated visits from Associate Pastor Mark Harpold, church friend Valerie Stewart and others.

Her graveside services were private, and a memorial service will take place in Melbourne in early spring.
