IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Chi Yee
Chang
January 1, 1955 – June 1, 2023
Chi Yee Chang, 68, passed away in his residence at Melbourne, Florida on June 1st, 2023. He was born in a city in the Guangdong Province of China on January 1st, 1955, to his parents Andres Chong and Maria Chong. While passing through a village on his way to visit relatives, he met his future wife, Yet Mee Chang.
Chi's youth took place during a time of great strife and upheaval. With his scholarly father persecuted by the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Chi and his parents parted ways. Chi's intellectual studies ceased as he remained in China while his father and mother sought peace and refuge in Honduras.
In China, Chi and his wife welcomed their first daughter. When his wife became pregnant with a second child, the family sought to escape China and its one-child policy. Chi traveled alone to Hong Kong, then to Honduras, and ultimately the United States to pave the way for his wife and children.
In 1984, Chi, his wife, and his two children immigrated to the United States. There, Chi reunited with his parents and his Honduras-born sisters. The family pursued the American Dream and set up shop in Miami, where Chi's father had entered the restaurant business. Chi joined his father in working at OK Chong's and Chang's Chinese Restaurant, where he learned to become an excellent restaurateur and chef.
Later, Chi started Chong's Chinese Seafood Restaurant in the heart of Miami's Latin community off Calle Ocho, or 8th Street. He and his wife had three more children in the United States. In 2013, he and his wife sold the restaurant and retired to Melbourne, FL.
Chi loved to read and listen to Chinese opera music. He is survived by his wife, Yet Mee; and his children Lai Wan, Wah Sang, Mercy, Christina, and Ana. He will be beloved and remembered for his kindness and his passion for gardening.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 7th from 2:00 until 3:00 pm at Davis Seawinds Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Service at 3:00 pm.
