Obituary

Charles Calvin Roan, Sr. was born in Ypsilanti, MI June 30, 1931 and passed away February 18, 2025. His parents moved back to Williamsport, PA when he was an infant. He was the son of Robert Wells and Sylvia Cohick Roan. He was pre-deceased by 4 siblings: Helen, Robert, Richard and Carl. Brother Donald Roan, Liberty, survives. Chuck is survived by his wife, Carol Drake Roan and his children, Melinda (Mindy) Steis (Gary), Melbourne, FL, Michael T. (Laura), Williamsport, PA and Charles C. Roan, Jr. (Denise), Cogan Station, PA. He is survived by 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was a proud Korean War Marine Veteran. He served 1 year on the front lines of Korea as a Buck Sergeant of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Division (1951-1954).

He was married to Carol Alice Drake. They would have celebrated their 71st anniversary this year.

He began working for his father in the antique and auctioneering business. He was the first Veteran in PA to use the VA Bill for auctioneering school. He partnered with his brother Richard and purchased the auction company from their father in the early 1960s. They named the company: Bob, Chuck & Rich Roan, Inc. They built a reputable, well-respected company. Chuck retired in 1988 and enjoyed antique picking. In the late 1980s he and his wife began wintering in Palm Bay, FL.

Over his life, he was a dedicated volunteer for local charities in PA and later in FL. In 1972 he was a board member of the local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society serving as their public relations chairman. He was instrumental in several fund-raising events, including Athletes vs MS, the Olympic Clown Games and Snowmobilers for MS. He was a volunteer fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Muscular Dystrophy, School of Hope, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, Grouse Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, Girl Scouts and for many private citizens caught up in catastrophic situations such as hurricanes Hugo and Andrew.

He was a member of the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County until relocating to Florida (2010) and the Marine Corps League. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 106, Marine Corps League, VFW, American Legion and AmVets. He served on the board of the Lycoming County Veterans Council.

In his travels he met a fellow Veteran at the AmVets club in Gastonia, NC who introduced him to the largest flying American flag in the world about to be launched on a beautiful mountain in NC. Chuck was mesmerized by this and traveled back to NC for the actual launch. He befriended the local AmVets group and convinced them to come to Williamsport, PA and fly their flag at a July 4th celebration. They agreed. Chuck went to work promoting and organizing local businesses, the mayor, city, radio stations and the Allison Crane company. They all pitched in and the celebration was a huge success. The visiting AmVets were honored with free lodging and meals sponsored by locals. Chuck learned that flags this large have to be replaced every 6 months. He convinced them to donate a 'used' flag to him to continue Williamsport's annual July 4th celebrations. Chuck recruited local businesses and groups to adopt the work needed to raise the flag annually as well as store and care for the flag the rest of the year. This year will mark the 27th annual July 4th celebration with this flag as the central icon flying between two cranes over the Susquehanna River. A beautiful sight! He is memorialized on the painted wall mural near Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport, PA by Michael Pilato.

In 2010, Chuck and his wife moved their permanent residence to Palm Bay, FL. He was an active member of several local Veterans organizations and participated in July 4th and Veterans Day parades annually. He facilitated helping Veterans in need whenever he learned there was a need. He initiated what is now an annual dinner honoring Veterans in December at the Palm Bay Ford dealership. All local Veterans are invited and treated to a meal and fellowship.

Chuck made everyone laugh and smile. He loved to share his wisdom. He made the best of every day. He awaited the opportunity to have fun with all people.

There will be a graveside service with full military honors at noon on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at Green Lawn Memorial Park, 62 State Route 54, Montgomery, PA.
