Obituary

May God grant you always...A sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, a sheltering Angel so nothing can harm you. Laughter to cheer you. Faithful friends near you. And whenever you pray, Heaven to hear you.  -An Irish Blessing-

Cecelia Mae McCabe, 100, of Melbourne/Palm Bay died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022. Cecelia Mae McCabe was born May 6, 1922 in New Haven Connecticut to Fred Lucas and Margaret McCabe, growing up as the "baby" of 5 children.

Cecelia lived in Ct. working as a bookkeeper for many years, raising Siamese cats, traveling to Germany and many places in the USA, and spending time with her family. In 2004 she moved to sunny Florida. Daughter and son-in-law Ron from Maine bought a "cottage" in Melbourne right behind Mom's to be near to help with whatever was needed - flying back and forth every couple of months!

Cecelia spent many adventurous years in Melbourne: taking Tai Chi classes, participating in a Red Hat group, (which she also enjoyed doing when she was visiting Maine!), and attending local music concerts. Later Mom moved to Life Care Center of Palm Bay where she celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family, including her much loved grandson Cliff and nephew Michael and wife Adria. Her last years spent at Life Care Center were full of activity where she was called the "energizer bunny" by her "Life Care family". Her morning ritual included saying her prayers, reading the daily newspaper to keep up on local and national happenings, opening her abundance of mail particularly from Peggyann who kept her supplied with the latest grandchildren pics; funny, serious, and religious sayings; and stamps) as well as having daily conversations with her two daughters. She enjoyed her chats every afternoon with her nephew Jim and wife Joan who sent her many care packages - delicious brownies and cookies - which Cecelia often shared with others. She looked forward to her outings shopping with Leslie and Cathy. Saturday night was always "Lawrence Welk" show.

Cecelia was fiercely independent, some would call stubborn, a "can't sit still" kind of person who always took care of business, was a lover of Siamese cats and of everything Irish, especially Irish music which she listened to often! She was very proud of completing many 5 K Road Races, and awards she won in her 80's!!

Cecelia was predeceased by her siblings Bertha Dade (James), Marge Link (Henry), Fred Lucas (Agnes), Will Lucas (Betty), nephew Patrick Link, and Walter Pohlman, her daughters' father.

Cecelia is survived by her two daughters Peggyann Calderwood (Cliff Sr.) and Donnajean Pohlman (Ronald Paquette), 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, many nephews and nieces and friends she has made over the years in Melbourne and Palm Bay, as well as Leslie, a special caregiver who was always there to give Mom whatever help she needed!

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at The Ascension Church, Melbourne Florida (where Mom was a parishioner for many years), on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023 at the 4:30 service.
