Obituary

Betty Jane Sorensen Lewis Croteau, 94, of Melbourne, Florida went home to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior, July 8, 2021. She passed peacefully with her daughter, Diane, and her caregivers at her side at home.

Betty was born to the late Samuel and Ruth Sorensen on October 17, 1926, in Greece, New York. She grew up in upstate New York, and moved to Miami, Florida in 1955. She joined First Baptist Church of Hialeah where she came to know Jesus. Betty was very active in church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, and was well liked and loved by many.

Betty married René Croteau in 1978. They lived in Hialeah, Florida for 26 years before moving to Melbourne, Florida, in 2003. They were married for 43 years. Rene' passed away on June 4, 2021, and as she told it, he was the love of her life.

Across the street from their house in Melbourne sits Harbor City Baptist Church, where Betty's niece and her husband attended. Betty joined them and soon became a member. It wasn't long before she became active there, teaching Sunday School. Betty's niece called her "Aunt Betty" all the time, and soon, everyone else started calling her "Aunt Betty." She was well liked and loved by the church members, and Betty liked to brag that she was the oldest member. In addition, she volunteered at the Pregnancy Resource Center. She felt blessed to be able to counsel young women.

Betty is survived by her daughter Diane (John) Shaw of Miami; Her sons John (Chris) Lewis of Ocala; and Michael (Dawn) Lewis of Plantation. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Mandy Lewis; Amy Abello; Katy Shaw Andlovec; Matthew Shaw; Crystal Raffield; and Charles "CJ" Lewis.
She is also survived by 7 great- grandchildren. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Together with René , they were richly blessed with 7 children, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren between them.

A Memorial Service will be held for Betty and René on March 18, 2022, at 11am, at Harbor City Baptist Church, 2711 North Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, Florida 32935. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's name to Harbor City Baptist Church, Missions.

Internment will be at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 US-1, Mims, Florida.
