IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur Louis
Larmay
April 20, 1931 – July 17, 2025
Arthur Louis Larmay, lovingly known as "Lou," passed away on July 17, 2025, with his devoted family by his side. He was born in 1931 in Attleboro, Massachusetts, where he grew up alongside his three sisters: Jeannie, Te, and June.
Lou proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Throughout his life, he was known by many nicknames—Scatman, Pumpkin, and Crazy Legs among them—but "Lou" was always his favorite.
A lifelong sports fan, Lou especially loved his beloved Boston Red Sox. He was often seen in his signature Red Sox wardrobe—Boston and Pawtucket Red Sox shirts, hats, shot glasses, and even blankets. A gifted athlete, Lou played both basketball and baseball, continuing to play in an over-60 baseball league until the remarkable age of 84.
Lou had a brilliant mind for trivia—not just sports, but movies and theater as well. But it was jazz music that held the deepest place in his heart. After retiring from a successful career in group medical insurance sales, he devoted himself to jazz. He attended many jazz camps and performed at local restaurants and venues, including his favorite, Heidi's Jazz Club.
Lou also had a deep love for travel. With his beloved wife Jan, he explored the world across six (almost seven) continents. After her passing in 2013, his adventurous spirit remained strong. In later years, he continued traveling, enjoying many cruises with his dear friend Eleanor Dunn.
A friend once said, "I love to see the world through Lou's eyes." That sentiment rang true—Lou had a way of finding joy, color, and music in every corner of life. He lived as though he were always on stage, sharing his light with everyone he met. The world has lost a true entertainer—a Scatman to the very end.
Lou is survived by his loving children, Michele Birdwell and Guy Larmay; his son-in-law, whom he proudly called his best friend, Barry Birdwell; his cherished companion, Eleanor Dunn; and his nephew, Bobby Swanson.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a treasured friend. Lou will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Health First Hospice in gratitude for their compassionate care.
