Obituary

Born to Ishmael and Myrtle McCalla in the warm hills of Bois Content, St. Catherine, Tom was one of seven siblings—three of whom, George, Seymour, and Una, have gone on ahead to be with the Lord, preparing the gates of Heaven for a grand reunion one day.

Tom began his early life at Ludford Mount Infant and Primary, now known as Bois Content Primary. His roots were Jamaican through and through—deep, proud, and unshakable. And though he journeyed to America in pursuit of new opportunities, he never left Jamaica behind. His accent remained rich and resonant, like the steady beat of a reggae bass line—unapologetically Jamaican, strong and true.

From farming to driving taxi, Tom always brought passion to whatever he did. He was especially fond of his Morris Oxford—a car that became something of a legend in the district. With its distinct sound and Tom's fierce devotion to keeping it polished and purring, it might as well have had its own personality. To him, that car wasn't just a vehicle—it was his prized companion, his rolling castle, and perhaps even his most reliable passenger.

Tom's spirit was magnetic—he was joy in motion. Whether dancing, cooking, or strumming his guitar, he made every gathering feel like a celebration. Many believed he'd end up in a band, and truth be told, he could have led one. He dressed like he was already on stage—sharp, stylish, and always coordinated.

In 1974, Tom moved to the United States, where he met Sophie—the woman who would become his wife and forever partner. Their marriage lasted 44 years, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering resilience. And though Tom has now gone to glory, their bond remains unbroken. For they never parted ways in this life, and even now, in spirit, their union holds firm—sealed with grace and everlasting love.

Tom retired from North Shore Hospital in Long Island and later moved to Palm Bay in 2004. He was a man who loved deeply—his family, his friends, and life itself. He found joy on the open seas, taking cruises with Sophie, meeting new people, and sharing his warm smile and vibrant laugh wherever he went.

He is preceded in death by his son Everton, and is survived by his loving wife Sophie; his son Kenrick; and his grandchildren Venessa, Malik, Jovane, Tamekia, Sophia, Christina, Isiah, Arthur III, Anthony, and Artaya. Also 12 great grandchildren.

Tom had a unique and beautiful way of embracing family. Whether by blood or through marriage, he drew no lines. To him, they were all simply his—loved equally and wholeheartedly. In his world, the ties that bound were not limited to genetics—they were rooted in love, and made stronger with time.

He also leaves behind his adopted children: Steve, Tonya, Joycelyn, Shelton, and Andre; his sisters Winnie (in England), Vie, and Iris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whose lives he touched with grace and kindness.

Tom was a man of faith—a God-fearing soul who lived with compassion and walked with conviction. As we remember him, we are comforted by the words in St. Matthew 25:21:
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

Rest easy, Tom. You've earned your place among the angels.
Your story was one of love, laughter, and legacy—
Gone from our sight, but forever etched in the hearts of those you touched.
